Hotel Review: Hotel TwentySeven, Small Luxury Hotels of the World™
When you envision a luxury hotel, what comes to mind? Perhaps it's the stunning interior design, impeccable service, an exclusive and serene atmosphere, or mouthwatering cuisine. While many hotels excel in one of these areas, it's rare to find a place that perfects them all. For me, Hotel TwentySeven was that rare gem—a property that delivered an unparalleled lodging experience beyond my highest expectations. From the bespoke services to the lavish accommodations, Hotel TwentySeven is an ultra-luxury hotel that left me thoroughly impressed. As part of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World collection, it truly stands out, and I'm excited to share my experience. Here is my review of Hotel TwentySeven:
Location
Hotel TwentySeven is located in the heart of Amsterdam, right on Dam Square, offering guests a prime spot to explore the city's vibrant atmosphere. The hotel is just steps away from iconic landmarks like the Royal Palace, where visitors can admire Dutch history and architecture. A short walk will take you to the renowned Anne Frank House, where you can delve into the poignant history of World War II. The hotel is also close to the lively shopping street Kalverstraat and the world-famous Amsterdam canals, perfect for a leisurely stroll or a scenic boat tour. With museums, cultural sites, and charming neighborhoods all within easy reach, Hotel TwentySeven is an ideal base for exploring Amsterdam's rich offerings.
Lobby & Check-In Review
After navigating the bustling Dam Square, we stepped into Hotel TwentySeven, conveniently located next to the luxury jewelry store Gassan. The hotel featured a selection of Gassan's exquisite pieces on display, available for purchase right on the premises. As we approached the entrance, a ceiling heater provided a welcome warmth, and the automatic doors opened to reveal a serene, albeit intimate, lobby.
The space was beautifully decorated with a modern, hand-blown chandelier and striking gothic arches, while fragrant diffusers filled the air.
A bellman promptly attended to our luggage, and the receptionist greeted us warmly acknowledging my Hyatt Globalist status with an upgrade to a one-bedroom suite. She also informed us about the breakfast hours at Bougainville, the hotel's one-Michelin-star restaurant.
Then, she introduced the hotel's personal butlers, who are available to arrange everything from dinner reservations and personal shopping to private tours and nanny services. After a brief introduction to the hotel, we went up to the fifth floor, where our suite was located.
Living Room Review
As soon as we stepped off the elevator, our butler, James, was there to greet us in front of the suite. He took care of our luggage and gave us a quick tour, starting by congratulating my wife on her birthday and presenting us with a full bottle of Ruinart Brut—an unexpected treat, far beyond the typical glass offered by most hotels.
The champagne, with its crisp notes of apple and toasted almond, was a delightful surprise. James shared a bit of the hotel’s history, revealing that the building once housed the Royal Industrieele Groote Club, a gentlemen's club still active today, though now inclusive of women. The rest of the building was converted from office space into Hotel TwentySeven in 2017, adding depth to our understanding of the hotel beyond its stunning design.
James highlighted the suite’s standout features before leaving, ensuring we knew he was available for anything we needed. The suite was equipped with cutting-edge technology designed to enhance our stay. Instead of a traditional peephole, the entrance featured a video camera, providing a clearer, wider view.
The “Do Not Disturb” and “Cleanup” signs were activated with the touch of a button, and I was struck by how quiet the living room was, despite the hotel’s central location in the bustling Dam Square. The double-glazed, bulletproof windows completely isolated us from the outside noise, offering perfect tranquility, yet could still be cracked open for fresh air.
The living room was a masterpiece of design, with patterned wood flooring and textured wallpaper adding layers of sophistication.
A deep velvet couch with numerous throw pillows, along with plush lounge chairs, created an inviting and comfortable seating area. A glossy piece of artwork adorned the wall; perhaps a nod to the building's history as a gentlemen’s club.
The curved smart TV across from the sofa could sync with the bedroom TV and was impressively responsive, with the top-notch sound quality delivered through a Bowers & Wilkins soundbar.
A Philips air purifier quietly ensured the air remained fresh, a thoughtful touch that surpassed the technological offerings of many other boutique hotels. The suite’s control panel was like nothing I’d seen before—about the size of a small iPad, it made adjusting the temperature, curtains, and even the color of the lights effortless. The ambiance modes allowed for endless customization, syncing with the bedroom and offering a truly personalized experience.
In one corner of the living room, a sleek black dining table with a glossy top held a beautiful vase with a flower. Though I might have enjoyed a traditional Delft vase, the dark, translucent vase perfectly matched the hotel’s chic aesthetic.
Along with the champagne, we were treated to two petite vanilla macarons and a personalized letter to celebrate the occasion. The minibar was a treasure trove; it was stocked with premium liquor and wine, as well as an espresso machine with a direct water line.
In addition to a pullout fridge, a slim wine cellar provided high-quality wines including a 2012 vintage Dom Perignon.
Crystal glassware awaited any beverage of choice, and large bottles of still and sparkling water were replenished daily.
The living room was filled with luxurious touches that surpassed those at other high-end hotels, from the advanced technology to the meticulous attention to detail. It was clear that a great deal of thought and care had gone into designing this space, and I was thrilled to experience it firsthand.
Bedroom Review
After passing through a set of heavy double doors, I entered a bedroom that was both luxurious and inviting. The lofty ceiling created a sense of spaciousness, while a petite chandelier added a touch of elegance to the ambiance.
The king-sized bed embraced me with its comfort, and the softness of the linens spoke volumes about the hotel's commitment to quality. Each side of the bed featured a generously sized nightstand, and an iPad was provided to control the room’s lighting and air conditioning, as well as provide a seamless mobile entertainment experience.
A stylish Bluetooth speaker by Oliver Hemming doubled as a clock and music player, but I was thrilled to find the same Bowers & Wilkins soundbar from the living room paired with a curved smart TV in the bedroom.
The rich bass from the soundbar created an immersive audio experience, and my wife and I found ourselves watching a movie, thanks to the hotel’s remarkable collection of complimentary classic and contemporary films—a first for us. The built-in wall closet and drawers beneath the TV lit up automatically when opened, making it easy to find what I needed, even in low light.
Like the living room, the blinds in the bedroom could be adjusted with a simple tap on the iPad. The hotel performed turndown service every morning, and as a thoughtful touch, they placed a charming vase with fresh flowers on my wife’s bedside table, adding a delightful touch to the room. The bedroom perfectly matched the high expectations set by the living room, with its state-of-the-art technology, privacy, and opulence, all centered around ultimate comfort.
Bathroom Review
The suite featured a half bath in the living room and a master bathroom connected to the bedroom. The half bathroom, though compact, was elegant with a white marble vanity that extended halfway up the walls, creating a sleek and modern look.
A floating toilet equipped with a high-tech Japanese bidet automatically lifted its lid as I entered, adding a touch of luxury.
The master bathroom, accessible through soft-closing double sliding doors, was an oasis of comfort. It boasted a double sink vanity with the same luxurious white marble, complemented by a large heated mirror that remained clear even after a hot bath.
Convenient USB ports and outlets were thoughtfully placed for charging electronic devices. The hotel provided two sets of travel-sized toiletries: Lalique and Lanvin.
While the Lanvin products were geared more towards women, I found both fragrances delightful and gentle on the skin. Housekeeping was meticulous, replenishing the toiletries twice daily, so I never had to ask for more.
Inside the vanity drawer, a Dyson hairdryer with various attachments awaited, a feature my wife and I greatly appreciated as we use a hairdryer daily. The in-room slippers, available in his and her sizes, were the most comfortable I’ve encountered—plush and perfectly padded.
The master bathroom also featured a floating toilet with an advanced Japanese bidet, offering a seamless bathroom experience. A separate whirlpool bathtub, one of the largest and most ergonomic I've ever used, delivered a perfect spot to unwind, with adjustable hydrotherapy settings that melted away the day’s tension.
After a bath, I could either wrap myself in plush towels from the towel warmer or step into the steam sauna, which doubled as a walk-in shower. The sauna was equipped with two rainfall showerheads, handheld options at different heights, and a bench for added comfort.
The steam sauna heated up in about 15 minutes and could be extended for another 20 minutes at the touch of a button inside the sauna—a thoughtful design that kept me from having to step out prematurely. For added convenience, the sauna could be pre-scheduled, so it was ready to use upon our return from exploring Amsterdam. Like other areas of the suite, the sauna’s ambiance could be customized with RGB lighting, making the experience even more enjoyable.
One of the most unique aspects of both bathrooms was the textured, non-slip marble flooring, which provided safety without sacrificing style. Initially skeptical, I quickly realized how effective it was—I felt secure walking without having to tiptoe after a bath or shower. The heated floor added a luxurious touch, offering instant warmth and comfort every time I stepped into the bathroom. The entire space was packed with thoughtful details that truly impressed me. While the whirlpool tub and steam sauna were standout features, it was the small, considerate touches—like the anti-slip flooring and intuitive sauna controls—that really showcased the level of care put into designing the hotel. This bathroom easily ranks as one of the finest I’ve ever experienced and has set a new benchmark for luxury in my mind.
Bar Review—Bar TwentySeven
One evening during our stay, we reserved a spot at Bar TwentySeven to indulge in some craft cocktails. Located on the third floor of the hotel, we arrived at 10:30 PM to find the bar buzzing with energy, its atmosphere reminiscent of the lively vibe you'd expect at a W Hotel. The clubby music and lively crowd were a bit surprising, as I had anticipated a more relaxed jazz ambiance. However, as the night progressed and the larger groups departed, the bar settled into a calmer mood.
The velvet chairs and couches provided plush comfort, and the tables by the windows offered stunning views of Dam Square. The gold-paneled ceiling, with its tiny holes, transformed into a constellation of lights, while hand-blown chandeliers echoed the hotel’s opulent aesthetic. Large, glossy artworks adorned the walls, adding a glamorous yet boutique feel to the space.
Bar TwentySeven, aptly named, features 27 unique cocktails, including a few mocktails. I started with the Bees Knees, a classic cocktail given a twist with Asian-inspired ingredients like lemongrass-infused gin and cardamom. The spicy honey added a delightful kick, making it less sweet than the traditional version, which I appreciated. For my second round, I chose the intriguingly named "Nobody Has Friends Over to 'Microwave,'" a cocktail inspired by the flavors of a summer BBQ with a focus on grilled bell pepper. It was an unusually specific flavor profile, but I was curious—and it did not disappoint.
The savory, smoky notes of red bell pepper were perfectly balanced by the Lapsang tea soda, creating a drink that was both complex and refreshing. Each cocktail was served with complimentary toasted spiced nuts, and while the drinks were on the pricier side, they were well worth it.
The craftsmanship of the cocktails was matched by the exceptional hospitality. The bartender was not only knowledgeable but also passionate, eagerly explaining the ingredients and techniques behind each drink. When I asked for recommendations on Dutch liquors to bring home, he went above and beyond, even writing me a handwritten list of his top picks. Bar TwentySeven is open to non-hotel guests, and if you’re a fan of seriously well-crafted cocktails, it’s a must-visit spot.
Breakfast Review—Restaurant Bougainville
Hotel TwentySeven boasts Restaurant Bougainville, a one-Michelin-starred gem where breakfast begins at 7:30 AM. The restaurant is intimate and opulent, adorned with petite chandeliers and plush velvet seating, all set to the soothing backdrop of gentle jazz music.
We chose a cozy booth, illuminated by soft candlelight and fragrant flowers, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere.
Thanks to my Hyatt Globalist status, breakfast was complimentary for my wife and me, with 45 euros per person covered by the hotel. The menu offered a la carte selections as well as three distinct breakfast experiences.
The Classic French Breakfast was a continental option and featured pastries and a beverage, while the Healthy Morning Breakfast provided a balanced, health-conscious meal. The most indulgent choice was the Extensive Breakfast, which we eagerly chose, and it turned out to be one of the finest hotel breakfasts I’ve ever enjoyed.
Our meal began with a delightful cup of coffee, and I opted for a cortado to kickstart my day, accompanied by a glass of freshly squeezed orange juice that was continually refilled.
The first course was a warm, bite-sized toast topped with Brie cheese and black truffle. The Brie cheese was perfectly melted, and the generous portion of black truffle added a rich, nutty flavor.
This was paired with a raspberry-tarragon shot, which offered a refreshing balance of tartness and savory notes. Next, we received a basket of freshly baked pastries, served with four savory spreads, including cream cheese, spicy cream cheese, butter, and my favorite—brown butter.
For a sweeter touch, individually packaged jams were available, and I couldn’t resist pairing my buttery croissant with chocolate hazelnut spread. A bowl of fruit salad followed, with the kitchen thoughtfully accommodating my wife’s allergies by providing a berry-focused selection. Cold cuts of smoked salmon, ham, and chicken, along with slices of truffle gouda and other cheeses, were presented on elegant, chilled plates.
As if that wasn’t enough, our egg dishes arrived—eggs benedict for me and a vegetable omelet with cheese for my wife. The eggs benedict featured perfectly poached eggs, layered with avocado and Pata Negra on a fluffy English muffin.
The vegetable omelet was cooked just right, maintaining its texture without being overdone.
We concluded our 1.5-hour breakfast with a petite cup of vanilla mousse, leaving us completely satisfied and thoroughly impressed.
The entire breakfast experience was truly indulgent, and the service was exceptional. The attentive waitstaff remembered our dietary preferences and ensured we were well cared for throughout the meal, making us feel at home every morning. The only downside (if I could even call it a downside) was the sheer volume of food—far more than we could finish. On our second day, we requested smaller portions to minimize waste, and the restaurant graciously accommodated our request, appreciating our consideration. Restaurant Bougainville is open to non-hotel guests as well, and I highly recommend that anyone visiting Amsterdam treat themselves to this exceptional breakfast experience—truly one of a kind in the city.
Positives & Negatives
Positives
My upgraded suite was a marvel of high-tech luxury, with features that truly enhanced my stay without feeling like mere gimmicks. The living area was a sanctuary of privacy and tranquility, thanks to impeccable soundproofing, and the entertainment system was nothing short of immersive. The bathroom was equally remarkable, boasting a spacious whirlpool bathtub, a walk-in shower with dual rainfall heads, and a steam sauna for ultimate relaxation.
Breakfast at Restaurant Bougainville was a Michelin-starred culinary journey, served in multiple courses that left me almost regretting I couldn’t eat more. The same level of creativity and excellence extended to Bar TwentySeven, where I enjoyed expertly crafted and unique cocktails.
What truly set Hotel TwentySeven apart was the outstanding hospitality. When I needed a shirt ironed, the hotel offered to send my butler to do it personally. The bartenders at Bar TwentySeven and the waitstaff at Restaurant Bougainville were attentive and thoughtful, remembering our dietary preferences and restrictions. Upon checkout, as we waited for our Uber to the airport, the doorman kindly stood outside with us, communicating with the driver to ensure our safe departure. These thoughtful touches exemplify what makes a great hotel truly exceptional.
Negatives
I had to think long and hard to find anything to critique about Hotel TwentySeven. While it’s challenging to pinpoint a flaw, I would mention that the absence of a gym might be a downside for some guests. However, I didn’t even miss having a gym, as the in-room amenities were so exceptional that they more than made up for it.
Summary
I never expected my stay at Hotel TwentySeven to be as flawless as it was. I thought it would be just another nice five-star hotel, but I was wrong. Located in bustling Dam Square, it’s perfect for both new and returning visitors to Amsterdam. With a limited number of suites, each room is designed with great attention to detail. My one-bedroom suite blended modern luxury and timeless elegance, featuring high-tech amenities like smart TVs and air purifiers alongside classic touches like wood flooring and marble finishes. The suite’s digital lighting, private steam sauna, and personalized butler service made it hard to leave. Bar TwentySeven’s craft cocktails were adventurous, and the breakfast at Restaurant Bougainville lived up to its Michelin star. What truly set the hotel apart was the exceptional hospitality. Though it’s expensive, Hotel TwentySeven offers an extraordinary experience in Amsterdam.
